🌸 French Writing: Students will begin writing their biography on a person he/she respects (using the information that was collected from home), tomorrow. This will be a formative assignment that will be completed by Friday of next week.
🌸 Math: Students are to practice their x2, x4, x8, x3, x6, x10, x5, x9, x7math facts (multiplication) for 10 minutes. Parents can assist their child using dice, cards, etc.
These are the outcomes that we are continuing to work on this week:
N1a: "Read and write whole numbers to 1 000 000."
N1b: "Describe personal referents for large benchmark numbers (100, 1000, 10 000, 100 000, 250 000, 500 000, 750 000, 1 000 000)."
N1c: "Flexibly express numbers in a variety of ways, including expanded notation."
N1d: "Describe the value of number digits and the pattern of place value."
Today's specific math homework: finish the sheet with the number lines and finding the middle.
Please note: In class, I have been ending some lessons with "exit passes" to inform me and you, the parents, of your child's comfort-level with place value language. I'm asking that the exit passes that are sent home, get initialed by a parent and returned to me. These will then be simply placed in your child's math binder for their personal reference.
Here are a few sample tasks or questions that could help your child review or prepare for the above outcomes as we continue through this week:
- Write out a large number and then ask your child to read the number out to you and then tell you the value of a particular digit in the number, and then the position of a particular digit of the same number (ex. 73 458 the value of the 3 is 3000 and the position of the 4 is "centaines".
- "How many unités de mille (thousands) are in a number like 354 871? The answer would be 354 unités de mille. I could ask about any position and its value, or the value of a position. These are tricky and it's all about the math language and its understanding.
- Practice problems such as: "20 dizaines de mille, 17 centaines et 8 unites" is equivalent to what? Answer 200 000 + 1 700 + 8 = 201 708
48 dizaines = ? 7 unités de mille et 32 centaines = ? 23 dizaines et 57 unités = ? etc.
* To do the above exercises, for now, students can use their "tableau de valeur de position" (place value chart) - your child should have this in his/her agenda or at home on his/her bureau. It should be in a page protector, so it can be reused as needed with a dry-erase marker.

They will complete their "organigramme" (graphic organizer) of a "bulletin météorologique" (weather report) at home. This means, they choose a city from anywhere in the world, but not Moncton (I am using Moncton to model this assignment and have uploaded my organigramme to help guide students - under "Upcoming Assessments"), and they gather all of the information needed for the graphic organizer for today's date, October 13th. Tomorrow, in class, they will begin writing up a weather bulletin that they will present to their class next week. The individual presentations will be presented towards the end of next week.
