🌸 Étude de mots: use "letters" to make words using the 5 new words from individualized list. Spelling test is Wednesday.
🌸 Scholastic flyers are being sent home today. Please have all orders and payments in by October 12th. Thank you.
🌸 French Writing: Students will begin writing a biography about a person he/she respects next Tuesday. By now, each student has chosen the person that he/she will write about. In order to write the biography, students should be using this week to collect information on the person that was chosen, i.e. date of birth, important dates and why these are important, etc. (Because a lot of information is needed, the person chosen should be a real person i.e. grandparent, uncle, aunt, neighbor, parent, etc.) Thank you in helping your son or daughter be prepared for this upcoming writing assignment.
🌸 Our District literacy, grade 5 fall assessment, is now finished.
🌸 Math: Students are to practice their x2, x4, x8, x3, x6, x10, x5 math facts (multiplication) for 10 minutes. Parents can assist their child using dice, cards, etc.
These are the outcomes that we are continuing to work on this week:
N1a: "Read and write whole numbers to 1 000 000."
N1b: "Describe personal referents for large benchmark numbers (100, 1000, 10 000, 100 000, 250 000, 500 000, 750 000, 1 000 000)."
N1c: "Flexibly express numbers in a variety of ways, including expanded notation."
N1d: "Describe the value of number digits and the pattern of place value."
Here are a few sample tasks or questions that could help your child review or prepare for the above outcomes:
- Write out a large number and then ask your child to read the number out to you and then tell you the value of a particular digit in the number, and then the position of a particular digit of the same number (ex. 73 458 the value of the 3 is 3000 and the position of the 4 is "centaines".
- "How many unités de mille (thousands) are in a number like 354 871? The answer would be 354 unités de mille. I could ask about any position and its value, or the value of a position. These are tricky and it's all about the math language and its understanding. (We did a lot of this today in class and will continue to do so for a while yet.)
- Practice problems such as: "23 centaines et 42 unités" is equivalent to what? Answer 2 300 + 42 = 2 342
48 dizaines = ? 7 unités de mille et 32 centaines = ? 23 dizaines et 57 unités = ? etc.
* To do the above exercises, for now, students can use their "tableau de valeur de position" (place value chart) - your child should have this in his/her agenda or at home on his/her bureau. It should be in a page protector, so it can be reused as needed with a dry-erase marker.
🌸 "Carnet French Reading": For the period of Oct. 3rd - Oct. 10th , there should be a total of 3 readings of 15 minutes done over 3 different days (see the short explanation on the right under "Items of note".) Carnet needs to be handed in completed on Tuesday, October 11th. Thank you.
🌸 Science: "La météo" (Weather).
- Students started collecting data daily at home using the data collection sheet last week. The sheet should be in your child's agenda until it needs to be returned to class. Students are noting current weather conditions, by visually observing weather and searching through the following websites: (copy and paste into a new web browser to access sites)
http:www.meteo.gc.ca/index_f.html and
http:www.meteomedia.ca
For this week collection dates are: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There should be a total of 5 entries in by Tuesday, Oct. 11th.) Thank you.
* Students are bringing home their homemade "anomémètres" to check windspeed. Encourage your child to note accuracy of this instrument using "L'Échelle de Beaufort" versus the instruments used by meteorologists.
